“Bombs Away” At Breeders Cup (11/2/14)

Nov 2nd, 2014 | By | Category: Breeders Cup

It was two days of surprising long shots and a confusing combination of speed horses and closers that made the 2014 a real nightmare for handicappers everywhere!  No excuses, but this handicapper would never have selected many of the winners — including Take Charge Brandi (who paid $125 in the Juvenile Fillies).  I do have some observations about a few of the performances that may carry over to next year!

1. Upstart may be a real contender for the triple crown in 2015 as a GREAT NY BRED STORY!  He had a very wide trip in the Juvenile for most of the race from post 13 and still made a sustained run to stay on for 3rd.  Any improvement next year and watch out!

2. Imperia was making a big run on the inside into the stretch during the Juvenille Turf when the hole closed and he absolutely had nowhere to go for the entire stretch –  should be a top 3-year old on the turf next year!

3. Work All Week ran his eyeballs out right on a torrid pace in the Sprint and all he does is win at this distance.  Maybe he will be the best sprinter in the country next year!

4. California Chrome is a California horse — loves Santa Anita and may have won with a little luck.  Props for coming back when everyone jumped off the bandwagon!

5. Bobby’s Kitten loved the cutback in the turf sprint, but even watching the replay knowing he won, I still can’t believe he got up.  He may be a monster if learns to rate a little in his mile races!

Not a very successful handicapping day, but the results destroyed the best handicappers in the country!  I can’t tell you how much I look forward to the 2015 Breeders Cup in Keeneland where the track will be kind to closers on both the dirt and turf!  My kind of racetrack!
