Can The Filly “Freak” Win The “Preak?”

May 16th, 2009 | By | Category: Today's Picks

Rachel Alexandra is the talk of the Preakness.  But talk is cheap unless she delivers.  Can she win…yes.  Will she win…maybe.  It all depends on how fast they go the first half mile.  Given the new players in the race (Big Drama, Take The Points and Tone It Down), you would expect a faster pace than the Derby, which would compromise Rachel’s chances given she likes to run on the lead.  Post 13 doesn’t help her either as she will have to be used early to get position.  If they run faster than 47, she loses.  Sounds simple, but I’m not sure the pace will be that fast.

I’m boxing the filly with Musket Man and General Quarters, both will be decent prices and can run well given a good trip.  I’m staying away from Friesan Fire and Pioneer of the Nile.  I loved the former in the Derby, but he had a rough trip and may still be below full strength.  Pioneer ran great in the Derby,  but may need a breather from his tough campaign.

This race can be run 13 different times with 13 different outcomes.  From a value standpoint, you should bet against the filly.  But I feel a little freaky today.   Good luck!
